CAPS and Absoft Corporation Announce Partnership to Promote CUDA and GPU Development Tools for HPC Computing Worldwide

Santa Clara – April 11th, 2010 - CAPS today announced it is expanding its partnership with Absoft Corporation, a recognized leader in Fortran and C/C++ development tools, to increase world-wide awareness and use of GPU software tools in the general and HPC computing space.

CAPS, an established French software company is well known for its HMPP™ manycore programming solutions. HMPP provides end users with a breakthrough technology which simplifies porting legacy applications onto hybrid systems - computer systems mixing CPUs & GPUs. GPUs in these hybrid systems can provide significant, cost effective, performance increases for many types of compute intensive applications.

HMPP, is a directive-based compiler, which provides an incremental programming model designed to rapidly build GPU accelerated applications. This means application developers spend less time adding support for massively parallel GPU architectures to legacy code. Additionally, the HMPP model, allows code to run in accelerated GPU mode on GPU systems, and in the conventional manner on non-GPU systems.

By combining its products and expertise with Absoft compiler tool suites, CAPS and Absoft are extending advanced GPU capabilities not only to HPC environments, but to desktop and workstation developers as well.

"The conjunction of Absoft’s Pro Fortran Compiler suites with HMPP allows CAPS to offer automated GPU development tools to a much larger and more diverse group of end users," said Denis Gerrer, VP Americas at CAPS. "HPC code is often developed on the desktop and Absoft is a leader on Linux, as well as Windows, and Mac OS, and all of these platforms can support GPUs. It is a strong message for the development community that HMPP is the right solution to easily leverage manycore performance within their existing development environments."

CAPS and Absoft say they have collaborated to ensure use of the Absoft/HMPP is easy and transparent for developers. HMPP parses the source and sends GPU code to the GPU compiler and Fortran code to Absoft Pro Fortran for compilation. Resultant binaries are then linked to create a single application optimized for the target GPU. Applications developed in this manner will provide code acceleration on GPU based systems and run in the conventional manner on non-GPU systems. This model ensures a single binary, based on the Absoft/HMPP GPU model, will have the benefit of portability across GPU and non-GPU systems while maximizing performance on either.

“Absoft studies determined that HMPP is the most complete and flexible GPU solution on the market,” said Wood Lotz, president of Absoft. “Combined with Absoft Pro Fortran, it is easy to use and one of the few solutions that can drive GPUs such as CUDA directly or via OpenCL. The OpenCL option provides flexibility to drive additional products in the future. Such flexibility is not available in GPU compiler solutions available from other vendors. Further, we have found performance increases of HMPP processed applications on CUDA enabled systems to be quite dramatic,” continued Lotz.
