Absoft Announces Availability
and Support for IBM’s
High Performance XL Fortran Compiler
for Macintosh OSX
Rochester Hills, MI (January 20, 2004) – Absoft Corporation
has entered an OEM relationship
with IBM through which Absoft is distributing IBM’s XL Fortran
compiler v8.1 for Macintosh
PowerMac™ computers running Apple’s OS X operating system.
According to recent benchmarks the XL Fortran compiler generates
the fastest executing Fortran code available for OSX. XL Fortran
includes support for advanced features such as auto-parallelization,
common in High Performance Computing (HPC) applications and other
compute-intensive tasks. Under this agreement, Absoft provides technical
support and includes its Fx Fortran Debugger for improved debugging
capabilities. Programmers achieve significantly increased productivity
by using XL Fortran with Absoft’s Fx Debugger, the only debugger
on OSX designed for Fortran. XL Fortran v8.1 runs under OSX on IBM’s
G5 PowerPC™ processor. The product’s suggested retail
price ranges from $999 for commercial licenses to $399 for academic

XL Fortran is a full implementation
of the ISO/ANSI Fortran 95 language implementation and supports
all F77 standards as well. XL Fortran includes extensions such as
full support for the OpenMP Fortran API Version 2.0, those from
SAA Fortran, and some features from the Fortran 2000 draft standard.
It also makes programming easier by shifting tasks such as error
checking, array processing and memory allocation from the programmer
to the compiler.
